Ms. Sandra C. Zimm of Watertown, NY, died at the age of 69 on Wednesday morning, May 2, 2018, at her summer home on Lake Ontario.

Sandra was born on April 6, 1949, in Oneonta, New York. Her family lived on Long Island during her childhood, and later moved to Watertown. Sandra graduated from Watertown High School in 1967, where her activities included choir and contributing to The Owl, the student literary magazine. She studied English at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Sandra returned to Watertown following college graduation and managed the family shoe store, Corysan Shoes, on Public Square in Watertown.

After the shoe store closed in 1985, Sandra earned an MS in English Education from SUNY Potsdam and began her beloved career as a high school English teacher at Harrisville Central School in Harrisville, NY. Sandra taught 10th and 12th grade students as well as Advanced Placement English, and assisted with extracurricular activities to include being the National Honor Society student advisor. Sandra was part of the Harrisville Teacher’s Association and was passionate about her involvement with the NY State Union of Teachers (NYSUT) Committee of 100, dedicated to lobbying for more support for education. She retired in 2013.

Sandra’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren!  She also enjoyed reading, gardening, singing, playing piano, boating, skiing, and traveling. Sandra is survived by a daughter, Leah Shanty-Zimm; a daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and grandson, Alexa, Dustin, Evelina and Theodor Simmons, and a brother, David Mitchinson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Sandra’s honor be made to the American Cancer Society.
