Edward A. "Bud" Schmeer

CAPE VINCENT, N.Y.  —  Edward Anton “Bud” Schmeer, 80, died peacefully at his home in Cape Vincent, on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., Bud graduated from Aquinas High School in 1949 and soon after enlisted in the Navy. 

In 1951, he married Marlene Wilcox before serving in Korea aboard the USS Pickaway. 

Upon his honorable discharge in October 1954, he and Marlene moved to Cape Vincent. Together, they owned and operated the “Cape Shop”, a clothing store, and “Gregor’s” a tackle shop in Cape Vincent, plus “Schmeer’s Apparel” in Clayton. Both retired in 2003 and wintered in Odessa, Fla.

Bud was an active member of his community serving as a Boy Scouts assistant troop master, and later a troop master in Cape Vincent. 

He was chairman of “Vocal”, a town wide group promoting the building of a bridge from Cape Vincent to Kingston, Ontario. He was also a 20-year member of Cape Vincent’s Town Planning Board.

An avid sportsman, Bud and his wife won the Husband and Wife New York State Skeet Shooting Championship in 1963 and the New York State Husband and Wife Trap Shooting Championship in 1989.

Surviving besides Marlene, his beloved wife of 60 years, are four loving sons, Kurt, Kyle, Mark, David, and their wives: Kelly, Susan, Mary-Ann, Penny; 12 cherished grandchildren; a sister, Sister Arlene Schmeer, and his devoted dog, Amy.

A funeral Mass will be said 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at St. Vincent of Paul Church Cape Vincent, with Father Pierre Aubin, pastor, officiating.Burial will follow in St. Vincent of Paul cemetery. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Cleveland Funeral Home, Cape Vincent.

In lieu of flowers, Bud has requested that donations be made in his name to Hospice of Jefferson County, 425 Washington St, Watertown, NY 13601.
