THREE MILE BAY, NY – Stephen F. Slater, 80, passed away on Sunday March 19, 2017 at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, NY.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown.
Stephen Slater was born on December 31, 1936 in Watertown, NY the son of the late Francis and Helen Mix Slater. He was a graduate of Watertown High School. Upon graduating, Mr. Slater attended SUNY Canton, earning an Associate’s degree in engineering. After college, he was employed with several companies in the Rochester area and with Scott and Fetzer, Northland Division in Watertown as an electrical and mechanical engineer. He served in the United States Air Force and was active duty from 3/31 through 11/10/1960 during the Berlin Crisis. He eventually went on to be a self-employed general contractor, owning Slater Contracting out of Three Mile Bay, NY.
He married Honora “Noni” Brayley on October 26, 19633 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Rochester, NY. A loving union that lasted for 25 years. Mrs. Slater passed away in December of 1988.
Mr. Slater was a Big Brother for the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program, and volunteered his time to Meals on Wheels and the Three Mile Bay United Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, as well. He was a craftsman and made beautiful furniture. He most loved working on unique projects, pyrotechnics, and spending time with his family and friends, especially summers at the cottage on Chaumont Bay.
Surviving are five sons, James and Nancy VanKouwenberg, Webster, NY; Richard and Heather VanKouwenberg, Farmington, NY; Thomas and FrancesVanKouwenberg, Greece, NY; Stephen and Melissa Slater II, East Rochester, NY; Scott Slater and Jay Uhlein, Watertown, NY. He is also survived by a brother, Robert and Jill Slater of Watertown, NY, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his beloved cat, Chubby.
Calling hours will be from 4-6 pm on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown, NY.
A funeral service will be said on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at 1:00 at the Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown. Donations can be made to the Three Mile Bay United Methodist Church or the Three Mile Bay Fire Department.
