BLACK RIVER, NY- Eugene Clarence Leary, 83, of Route 3, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 surrounded by his family at the SUNY Upstate Hospital.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home Inc., Watertown, NY.
Eugene was born May 30, 1934 in Rossie, NY to the late Clarence Wilton Leary and Agnes (Hughes) Leary. He attended school in Brasie Corners where his aunt Alice Leary taught. When his parents moved to Watertown, he attended schools there.
He joined the Marine Corps on January 20, 1950, during the Korean War. In January 1968, he joined the New Jersey National Guard, MATES, at Fort Drum where he retired from in May 1994.
He married Marie C. Edus in Laurel, Maryland on October 21, 1965 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They spent 52 wonderful years of marriage together until Marie’s passing on November 5, 2017.
Eugene was a member of the Black River American Legion Post 673. He enjoyed making models of military vehicles, trains, boats, and planes. He was a big fan of the Buffalo Bills and NASCAR.
He is survived by his two sons; Daniel M. Leary (Holly), Champion, NY, Matthew R. Leary (Tina), Calcium, NY, a daughter; Rebecca Best (Brian), Black River, NY, his two grandchildren; Madison and Bryce Leary, Champion, NY, a brother; Paul Leary, SC, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 3, at 11AM at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Black River, NY with a burial to follow at the Black River Cemetery. There will be a reception afterwards at the Carthage American Legion Post 789 from 1-4PM.
