Charles “Chuck” Gavin Wert, age 67, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on December 28th, 2017. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home Inc., Watertown, NY. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at a date to be announced. The youngest of 4 children, he was born January 26th, 1950 in Amsterdam, NY to Sheriff William S. and Catherine M. Wert.

He is predeceased by his parents and sister Catherine LeRoy (Marv) of Amsterdam. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Ann, his daughters Katie Taylor (Ricky), Lorie Autote (Christopher), grandsons Gavin & Zachary Taylor and Drew & Evan Autote, his brother Jim Wert (Nancy), sister Melynda Argersinger (Donald), many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews, and their children.

Chuck graduated from Amsterdam High School in 1968 and was a proud “Rugged Ram”! He attended Washburn University in Topeka, KS on an athletic scholarship and returned to his hometown in 1970. Chuck met his future bride, Mary Ann Nadler, at Trinity Reformed Church while singing in the choir. They married in that church on July 15th, 1972. He worked in law enforcement for 4 years before taking a management position at a local Pizza Hut. In 1977 the franchise moved he and his family to Watertown to open the Arsenal St. Pizza Hut as its manager. In 1982 he and his wife opened the Wing Wagon on Public Square in Watertown, which is still open after 35 years.

Chuck was an avid barbershop singer, a hobby in which he was tremendously involved. He began his barbershop career singing with the Islander Chorus in Watertown in 1983. Over the last 34 years he also sang with and directed choruses in Rochester, Canton, Carthage, and Syracuse. His comedy quartet, “Cornerstone”, entertained audiences around the globe for over two decades! He also proudly sang in a quartet with his wife and daughters called “Compound W”, starting in 1988. He was an avid golfer and a lover of all things sports, especially the NY Giants! He greatly enjoyed travelling the world with his wife, cooking, loving his cat “Jack”, and most of all supporting his grandsons in their musical, sporting, and academic endeavors. He was loved and admired by many.
