WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Joseph Edward Scee, 65, died Friday, March 19, at Samaritan Medical Center from heart failure.
Born May 17, 1944, in Buffalo, the son of John Herbert and Eunice M. Scee, of Carthage, he graduated from St Augustinian Academy High School, Carthage. He earned a BS degree in Elementary Education and a Masters in Computer Science from the State University of New York at Oswego.
Joe entered the Navy in 1968 and served in Vietnam as a Line Officer on a communications ship at Cam Ranh Bay and along the coast of Vietnam supporting the fleet and coordinating gun fire. He joined the Naval Reserves in 1969, reaching the rank of Commander. He commanded the U.S. Naval Reserves Station, Mullin Street, Watertown, and retired from the Reserves in 1987.
Joe taught in the Watertown City School District from 1968 until 2001. He was an active member of the Watertown Education Association and served on the Executive Board. He also taught adult education classes in computer science at Jefferson Community College and Watertown Correctional Facility, Watertown.
He married his long-time friend Betty Maureen Waterbury on July 9, 2006.
Joe enjoyed traveling in his car and on his boat with his wife. He loved animals and had dogs, cats and birds. Joe enjoyed his garden and never said no to more flowers.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Betty, Watertown; a sister and her husband, Linda and Claude Lamantia, Carthage; a sister Mary Margaret Trombley, Carthage; and various nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother John Graham Scee.
Three years ago, he was fortunate enough to locate his birth mother Eileen Wingenfeld, Vero Beach, Fla., and his sister Marilyn Hamel, Brooklyn, N.Y., and other members of the family.
