A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown. Burial will follow in Degel Israel Cemetery. 


WATERTOWN, N.Y.  —  Robert M. Jupiter, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, at his home at the Ives Hill Retirement Community. A former resident of Bayside, N.Y., he had lived in Watertown since September 2005.   

Born Oct. 17, 1916, in New York City, the son of Jacob and Anna Mittleman Jupiter, he graduated from Stuyvesant High School and City University of NY.  He later graduated from St. John’s University Brooklyn’s Law School.  

Mr. Jupiter married Ray Kirsch on Jan. 17, 1942. She died Nov. 7, 2006. 

Mr. Jupiter was a New York City police officer for 25 years, retiring in December 1966, as captain and commanding officer of the 43rd Precinct.  

After retiring, he served as head of security at Mt. Sinai Hospital at which time he attended law school at night. After law school, he became an attorney working for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of New York, where he was chief of claims for the office until retiring in 1984.   

Survivors include, Rowena Miller, Dexter, Jay Jupiter, Alexandria, Va., and Merle Jupiter, Cheshire, Conn.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

Donations maybe given in his memory to the Degel Israel Synagogue or Watertown YMCA. 

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.
