CAPE VINCENT, N.Y. —
Born Nov. 14, 1933, in Queens, the son of John Henchy and Ida Houser Henchy, he grew up in Queens and was educated in New York City.
He married Carol Mason Watertown on Dec. 28, 1957, and eventually settled in Ashland, Mass., in 1958.
Harold raised his family in Ashland where he lived for 45 years and worked for the Raytheon Corp. for 35 years, retiring in 1995.
After retiring, he and his wife built a home in Cape Vincent and moved in 2003.
Harold also known affectionately as “Harry”, volunteered in many organizations throughout his life. Harry was a charter member of the Ashland Lions Club, where he served as president from 1974-75 and Secretary for 33 years. He was the recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones Award in 1987 and the Progressive Melvin Jones Award in 2002, he was also awarded life time member status. He served in the Ashland Public School System as a School Committee Member for 15 years; 5 years as Chairman, receiving a lifetime achievement award in 2002, and had a room dedicated in his name in the new Ashland High School. He was a member of St. Cecilias Church in Ashland, MA for 43 years and volunteered for many youth sports programs. He was named Ashland Volunteer of the Year in 1997 and Senior Citizen of the Year in 1998.
After moving to Cape Vincent, he was a member of St. Vincent of Paul Church; the LeRay De Chaumont Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, Cape Vincent Lions Club, and volunteered at the Tibbets Point Lighthouse Society. He enjoyed his time as a part time worker at PBS Television in Watertown, where he was instrumental in acquiring items for their fund raising auctions.
Surviving are his wife, Carol, Cape Vincent; three sons; Steven and his wife Barbara, Franklin, Mass, Christopher, Cape Vincent, and Joseph, Fall River, Mass; a daughter and her husbamd Kim and Vincent Hanrahan, Ashland, Mass.; six grandchildren, Patrick, Ryan and Colin Hanrahan, Ashland, Mass., and Lauren, Emma and James Henchy, Franklin, Mass.; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, two a brothers, Edward and Warren Henchy, two sisters Blanche Miller and Shirley Dipippo;, and a grandson, Sean Hanrahan.
A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, at St. Vincent of Paul Church, Cape Vincent, with Father Pierre Aubin officiating. Burial will be in St Vincent De Paul Cemetery, Rosiere. Calling hours will be 4 to 8 pm. Tuesday, April 5, at the Cleveland Funeral Home, Cape Vincent.
